Huntsville Stars starting pitcher Drew Gagnon was honored by Minor League Baseball as the Southern League’s Pitcher of the Week for the week of May 12th-18th.

Gagnon received the award after pitching 7.2 scoreless innings against Birmingham on Friday night, May 16th. The former third round pick out of Long Beach State University struck out five batters, while allowing just two hits as he picked up his fourth win of the year.

The 6’4″ righty struggled some after a mid-season promotion to Double-A Huntsville last season, going 4-9 with a 5.57 ERA in 16 Double-A starts.

He’s fared much better in his second stint in the Southern League, posting a 4-1 record with a 2.36 ERA through his first nine starts of 2014. He’s held opposing hitters to a .201 batting average, allowing just 36 hits in 53.1 innings of work.

Gagnon’s next start is scheduled for Thursday, May 22nd at Montgomery as the Stars take on the Tampa Bay Rays Double-A affiliate, the Montgomery Biscuits.
