Around the Horn: Monday, June 16th
Tacoma 4, NASHVILLE 3
The Sounds tried to mount a late rally, but came up short, falling to Tacoma by a run on Sunday afternoon. Ariel Pena started and struggled with his control, giving up two runs on two hits and six walks in three innings of work. Kyle Heckathorn followed with three scoreless innings of relief, but the Rainiers got to Arcenio Leon for two runs in the seventh as Leon was charged with the loss. Hector Gomez led the offense, going 3-for-4 with a run scored. Eugenio Velez and Caleb Gindl each singled twice in four at bats.
The Stars were off on Sunday as they begin a four day break for the Southern League All-Star game. The game will be held on Tuesday night, with Huntsville returning to action on Thursday when they travel to Pensacola.
BREVARD COUNTY Idle
The Manatees were off following Saturday night’s Florida State League All-Star game. They will be back in action on Monday when they wrap up the first half of the season with a three game set with Dunedin.
WISCONSIN 2, Quad Cities 13
The Timber Rattlers were blown out in their final game before the All-Star break, falling to Quad Cities 13-2. Clint Terry started and took the loss after giving up six runs in only two innings. Johnny Davis reached base three times for the T-Rats, collecting a single, a triple and a walk. Garrett Cooper went 2-for-4 with a double, while Omar Garcia singled twice in five at bats.
DSL BREWERS Idle
The Brewers had their typical Sunday off day. They return to the diamond on Monday when they take on the Blue Jays DSL affiliate.
PLAYERS OF THE DAY
Hector Gomez (Nashville Sounds) – 3-for-4, Run scored
Gomez picked up three base hits in four at bats on Sunday afternoon to raise his season average to .258. The shortstop from San Pedro de Macoris has hit safely in seven of his last ten games and is batting . 308 over that span for the Sounds.
Kyle Heckathorn (Nashville Sounds) – 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 K
Heckathorn came on in relief of starter Ariel Pena and kept Nashville in the game with three scoreless innings. He allowed just one hit and struck out two.
At Double-A Huntsville, catcher Adam Weisenburger was placed on the disabled list as the Stars enter their All-Star break. The Brewers also signed pitcher Wesley Cox, an undrafted free agent out of UT-San Antonio and assigned him to Helena. In 28 relief appearances during his senior season, Cox went 7-2 with a 2.28 earned run average.
