The Brewers officially announced the addition of three coaches to their coaching staff for the 2016 season on Monday, naming Pat Murphy as the team’s bench coach and Derek Johnson as their new pitching coach. In addition, Lee Tunnell will return as the Brewers bullpen coach next season.
Murphy, who was Craig Counsell’s manager while in college at Notre Dame, had most recently served as the interim manager of the San Diego Padres, following their firing of manager Bud Black last season. Counsell tried to add Murphy to his staff after taking over last season but the Padres denied the Brewers request to speak to him.
Johnson comes to the Brewers from the Chicago Cubs where he previously served as the organization’s coordinator of minor league pitching for the last three seasons. Previous to that he served as the pitching coach at Vanderbilt for 11 seasons.
Tunnell, who spent the past three seasons with Milwaukee will be returning for his fourth season as Milwaukee’s bullpen coach after overseeing a group that led the National League in strikeouts in 2015.
The three coaches will join a pair of holdovers from the 2015 staff as it had been previously announced that Ed Sedar will return as the Brewers third base coach with Darnell Coles coming back for his second season as the team’s hitting coach.
