The Brewers announced a series of roster moves on Thursday with Michael Reed returning to the Colorado Springs lineup and Brett Phillips heading to the disabled list at Biloxi among the headliners.
Reed, who had been in the Brewers concussion protocol after colliding with an outfield fence, came off the DL for the Sky Sox, who made room on their roster by releasing 29-year-old outfielder Ben Guez.
At the Double-A level, Phillips was sent to the 7-day DL after suffering a hamstring injury earlier in the week and Omar Garcia was promoted from High-A Brevard County to take his place. Biloxi also activated right-handed pitcher Daniel Tillman from the disabled list with lefty Hobbs Johnson going on with an undisclosed injury to free up a roster spot.
Garcia’s promotion left an opening at Brevard, where outfielder Malik Collymore was promoted from extended spring training in Arizona. Collymore, acquired from St. Louis last season in exchange for pitcher Jonathan Broxton, skips over Class-A Wisconsin after finishing out last season with Helena in the Pioneer League.
The Brewers also announced the signing of 25-year-old relief pitcher Gage Smith, who made nine appearances for Detroit’s High-A affiliate in the Florida State League earlier this season. No word yet on where he will be assigned but a stint in extended in Maryvale could be a logical starting point for former Florida State Seminole.
