The Brewers Dominican Summer League team finished the 2015 season eight games under .500 with a record of 32-40 which put them in sixth place in the San Pedro de Macoris Division, 14 games back of the first place Red Sox.
This year’s squad figures to once again be quite young, but features some intriguing prospects, including several of last year’s July 2nd signings who will be making their pro debut.
The Brewers DSL roster features a handful of new signings ticketed for the DSL who could make their way stateside before long and are certainly worth keeping an eye on.
Pitchers: The DSL Brewers 2016 pitching staff will be on the younger side as just five pitchers return from last year’s team. Holdovers Deymar Alvarado, Jesus Brea, Joaquin De La Cruz, Starling Duval and Maiker Pinto will be joined by new faces such as 17-year-old lefty Luis Cordero and 6’4″ Dominican right-hander Johan Dominguez.
Catchers: The big name on this year’s Brewers roster will be 17-year-old Venezuelan Jose Sibrian, who the Brewers signed last July for a reported $550,000. Sibrian was in Maryvale for instructional league and extended spring training before joining Milwaukee’s DSL affiliate where he’ll make his official debut. He’ll be joined behind the plate by Bryan Torres, who hit .250 in eight games last season as well as new faces Moises Perez and Luis Avalo.
Infielders: Javier Castillo and Josue Herrera return on the infield, where they’ll be joined by newcomers Aaron Familia, Luis Manon, Luis Avila and Edwin Sano. Familia signed for $370,000 last July while the switch-hitting Manon signed for $200K.
Outfielders: Marcos Pinero and Jay Feliciano return in the Brewers outfield and they’ll have some exciting youngsters joining them in Jesus Lujano, Bryan Connell, Yorki Franco and Jose Pena. The left-handed hitting Lujano could provide a spark in center field after signing last July for $350,000 and the Panamanian Connell has the potential to develop into a power threat as he develops.
Coaching Staff: Victor Estevez takes over as the new manager for the DSL Brewers after having previously served as an assistant on Jose Pena’ staff. Pena will stay on as an assistant and be joined by pitching coach Gerald Obispo as well as coaches Luis De Los Santos and Joan Abreu.
The Dominican Summer League opens its season today with the Brewers playing host to the Angels with first pitch scheduled for 9:30 AM CST.
